BRC Global Standard for Consumer Products Issue 3 - Furniture Guideline

The purpose of this guideline is to provide additional information to help furniture factories implement the Global Standard for Consumer Products Issue 3, and to assist auditors preparing to visit such sites. It should be noted that the guideline does not contain any additional requirements to those detailed in the Global Standard; rather it gives some indication of how the requirements of the Global Standard might be achieved. It also provides useful information and general guidance on the product safety issues relevant to furniture production, which are equally applicable to those sites not wishing to implement the Global Standard.

The guideline does not replace the Global Standard; it is the requirements of the Global Standard which must be met in order to achieve certification (for more details on the certification scheme, please refer to the Global Standard).

This guideline provides information to enable the safe and legal production of furniture products to be supplied to consumers – that is, furniture destined for private use in a domestic dwelling. Although many of the principles and requirements will be appropriate for furniture products used in a nondomestic environment (e.g. offices, schools, hotels, residential care homes, etc.) such environments may have additional requirements which are not addressed here.

Some of the main product categories that are included within the scope of furniture are:

  • Upholstered furniture

  • Other seating, tables

  • Storage furniture

  • Bedroom furniture (including beds and mattresses)

  • Garden furniture

  • Glass in furniture

In addition, children’s furniture, bunk beds and kitchen furniture will be referenced but not covered in full. The guideline excludes childcare articles such as cots and changing tables. The detailed requirements for products other than furniture have not been fully considered here but some of the information contained in the guideline may be useful for other items similar to furniture in their use or manufacturing process.

Other BRC best-practice guidelines particularly likely to be of interest to users of this guideline include:

  • Product Recall

  • Complaint Handling

  • Traceability

  • Internal Audit

About FIRA

The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA) was established more than 60 years ago to support the UK furniture industry and its associated supply chain. Today, FIRA is the UK’s, and one of the world’s, leading furniture technology centres, and continues to provide a unique range of expert services dedicated to the global furniture supply chain.

Research carried out at FIRA in the UK resulted in the development of the original test methods that are now used in all British standards for furniture, which in turn have formed the basis of European and international standards. Today, FIRA experts sit on all the appropriate British, European and international standards committees, and in many cases chair the committee.

FIRA also offers a full range of technical expertise to the furniture industry, including research partnerships, consultancy and training in such areas as manufacturing, lean engineering, materials, textiles, flammability, health and safety, ergonomics, and environmental/sustainability issues. FIRA’s expert witnesses are recognised by courts and enforcement authorities as the premier experts in furniture in the UK.

FIRA’s service technicians are the aftercare support service of choice for the UK’s leading furniture retailers, whilst the Furniture Ombudsman provides independent dispute resolution and support to both consumers and furniture retailers.
