GOVERNANCE OF THE STANDARD

The operation of the BRC certification scheme is managed on a day-to-day basis by the BRC Global Standards Technical Team with input from the key stakeholders and users. This includes governance by key retailers and input from users across the globe in the form of technical advisory committees, certification cooperation groups aided by continuous feedback from users.

The operation of the BRC certification scheme is governed by our Governance and Strategy Committee made up of senior technical representatives of international retail, food and consumer products companies.

Technical Advisory Committees

International Technical Advisory Committees are in place for each Standard consisting of key stakeholders including retailers, manufacturers, Certification Bodies and Accreditation Bodies who oversee the production and review of the Standards, input to interpretation issues and review of training materials.

A framework of international Co-operation Groups of Certification Bodies working in each country also reviews technical issues regarding implementation of Standards to help ensure consistency.

Each of the BRC Global Standards has at least one Technical Advisory Committee; the Food and Consumer Products Standards each have two committees one in North America and one in Europe. The role of the Technical Advisory Committees is to provide advice and technical assistance to the BRC on the management of the Standards including:

  • Review of the contents of the standard – periodic updates to the Standards

  • Technical advice on interpretation of particular requirements of  the Standard

  • Auditor competency requirements

  • Certification protocol

  • Certification Body management processes

The Technical Advisory Committees are made up from the various Stakeholder Groups using the Standard and include Retailers, Manufacturers, Trade Associations, Certification Bodies, Independent Technical Experts and Accreditation Bodies.
